Notes on Award Winners from the Juror, Jean Cook
BEST OF SHOW is "March Morning Flinthills" by Richard Hayek. This pastel was masterfully done. The softness of the trees against the hill side contrasted with the confident light streak in the sky. Beautiful piece and well presented. Good job! The 1st Place winner in the Painting Category is “End of Day” by Johne Richardson. This painting is a reflection of the confidence the artist has with the medium and the subject matter. The colors in the sky just glowed and the drawing skill of the artist was evident in the handling of the horses and riders in the foreground. I love the use of thick paint! The 1st Place winner in the Photography Category is “As Far as the Eye Can See” by Jim Walker. A dramatic sky that sets a mood! The road brings you farther into space. I chose this one because of the drama in the sky and the contrast of the fall colors with the blues in the sky. The 1st Place winner in the 3-D Category is “Serving Up sunflowers” by Kristine Luber. There was only one entry in the 3-D category, but it is a piece worthy of being a first place. It is beautiful! The 1st Place winner of the Other Category is “Butterfly Milkweed” by Debbie Wagner. This fabric piece impressed with workmanship and the use of color and composition. Beautiful! It gave me the feeling of the Flint Hills.
