Bio:

Doug Frye Artist’s Statement I envision hard edged reality through my paintings on raw surfaces. By using the underlying surface color, which can be seen through the medium, I create the tone and mood of the painting. I am a physician treating acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain and believe that through my art work healing can be found for my patients and myself. By combining the passive observer with the emotional content of the subject a therapeutic force is created. I began drawing as a child and developed my own style of art with little formal training. After finishing my medical internship in 1983 I began painting seriously, first with pastels and then with watercolor. After moving to Arizona in 1986 I experimented with acrylic and used composite board or plywood as my surface. I soon found that using board allowed me to paint in non-rectangular shapes. My first experiments were with triangles although I found them hard to frame. When I arrived in Topeka in 1989 I found access to a wood shop and began experimented with many different cutout paintings. I still love painting with traditional rectangular shapes, but am known for doing cutouts. Since 2012 I have begun to use oils in many of my works. My first one man show was in Silverton, Colorado in 1986. Since then I have participated in many regional shows and had 11 more one man shows. I have received awards in several shows including Southwest Gallery’s “Paint Topeka” and “Ensley Gardens” shows and the “Portraits and Characters” show at Yeldarb gallery.
