Bio:

Sandra Johnson is an abstract mixed media artist painter who lives and works in Kansas City, MO. She was born and raised in Wichita, KS. Her distinctive personal style emanates a feeling of blissful joy. Johnson’s work expresses the vibrant spirit and an atmosphere of imagination and fantasy. Much of Johnson’s work is bursting with whimsical birds or her imagined faces that are brought to life with bold harmonious contrasting colors. As the artist will tell you, "I make art to show my soul that I am listening" (recitethiss.com). The artist has a reverent love for nature and particularly with birds. She strives to bring the unique sounds of her surroundings come alive through the strokes and bright bold hues of rich heavy colors used in her paintings. As a young child, Johnson quickly found herself obsessed with anything she could find to sketch with and sketch on. She spent countless hours alone experimenting with different techniques and textures, drawing painting and exploring by herself. This continued until her college years until she began raising and enjoying her own family, which also became her passion. The artist believes that no matter how hectic life can become, if your passion is bubbling deep within your soul, you will always find a way to integrate that expressive spirit into your busy and sometimes chaotic life. Johnson shares the memories of her young children running between her and the flimsy thrift store purchased easel as she painted in the small space she created. She states, "You just find a way to release the passion and let it come out to play.” While the artist still proclaims she was self-taught, she also gives credit to a very special art teacher Mr. Norman Terry whom she was blessed to have in her high school days. ‘I longed and anticipated each day that I could attend his magical and inspirational class’ she proclaimed. Johnson explains that her free passion and love to create was almost an internal spiritual awakening. She would be driven to carve out time, so she could immerse herself in a hypnotic and sometimes questionable world of color. The artist dabbled in a few small local art events while raising her children but never did get serious until 2017 when she started entering local Kansas City events on a smaller scale. She now hopes to open herself up to larger venues and get involved with the enormous art community that currently is growing. Indeed, Johnson has created her own visual and exuberant style. Through her paintings we can experience this world in a colorful mesmerizing way. As the artist so clearly states, "My pieces have always been more about invoking a peaceful inner joy and happiness that I can hopefully bring to another's soul.”
